Before actually packing-up your items, you need to have a concise plan.
For example:
Pack one room at a time. This will help with organisation and unpacking at the other end.
Pack a couple of cartons a day, starting well in advance of the move with non-essential items.
Mark all boxes clearly, designating the room and box number. Make a carton identification log listing the number of boxes packed per room and the total number of cartons packed.
It is a good idea to leave space in your log for a special comments section to note carton conditions or location of high value goods. Notify your mover of any high value or fragile items and emphasise the care needed.
Be sure to have plenty of filling material available to prevent any damage.
Be sure that the bottoms of all cartons are firmly secured and will hold the weight of the contents. Put pieces of card or layers of newspapers at the bottom of cartons for extra reinforcement.
Packing tape or gummed tape is better to seal cartons than masking tape.
Pack heavier items at the bottom of the box and lighter items towards the top. This will distribute the weight evenly, making them easier to carry.
Try to keep the weight of each box at 50 lbs or less; it makes transporting them a lot easier. A general rule to remember on carton size - the heavier the item, the smaller the carton.
