How to Deal with Apartment Lease on Occasions of Sudden Relocation

Published on Wednesday, 16 December 2009

Got a two-year lease on an apartment but your new job demands that you move to another city before your lease is done? There's nothing more stressful than having to deal with moving and an unfinished lease. But whilst most contracts are iron-clad and require that you pay the remaining months on your lease, even if you won't be staying in that apartment for the rest of the year, there are ways to help you deal with an apartment lease on the event that you have to relocate suddenly.

1. Study your contract. There are some contracts that only require you to give a certain number of months' notice before terminating your lease. Read all the fine print and ask for advice from a lawyer to study your contract for the best way to terminate your lease.

2. Talk to your landlord. If you have been a very good tenant and have been paying on time, chances are, you will be able to talk to your landlord about terminating your lease before your contract is up. Explain your situation and offer to look for someone else who can lease out your apartment for the remaining months on your lease. You might be able to strike a fair deal with him.

3. Sub-lease your apartment. Try to get a friend or relative to rent out the apartment for the remaining months. This will be easy if you live in a flat located in a busy area. Subletting is generally legal, unless otherwise stated in your contract. Choose someone you can trust since it will still be your name on the contract if you sublease your apartment.

4. Try to stay a little longer. Postpone your move for as long as you can, so you get the most out of your lease and lessen the number of months remaining on your contract before you leave.

5. Just pay the remaining months. If you just have one or two months left in your lease, just suck in your gut and pay the remaining months off. It will decrease your stress and worries.

Don't get too stressed over having to break the lease in your flat if you suddenly have to move. The five tips above can give you ideas and tips on how to save yourself from needless spending because of sudden relocation.
