Estate Agents - How to Make a Complaint When the Need Arises

Published on Sunday, 03 January 2010
When you are looking for real estate agents to buy or sell a property, you should make sure that they are accredited by the so-called redress scheme. The redress scheme is used in order to help you deal with complaints against these experts when the need arises. An expert who does not belong to this scheme shall be penalised an amount of £1,000.In addition to the fine, which can be recurring in nature, the real estate agent may be forced to close his business.
But how will you know if the estate agent is a member of a redress scheme?
In the UK, there are only two legal redress schemes in which your agent may be a member. You may actually check if he is a member of:
1. The Property Ombudsman or TPO. The TPO seal is usually seen on the consumer's guide handed over by your real estate agents.
2. The Surveyors Ombudsman Service or SOS. The SOS usually hands over a copy on how you may handle the complaint against your agent.
How will you go through with the complaint process?
Before ever going to the TPO or the SOS, you must make sure that you file a complaint against the firm first. Give them the chance to explain their side. This is the fair way to conduct the proceedings.
If you are not satisfied with the agent's explanation, you may elevate your demand to either of the two redress schemes. They will be there to assist you in the entire process.
