How to Make the Move Least Stressful for Your Cat

Published on Friday, 19 February 2010

A move can be stressful to everybody including your pet cat. It can even be more stressful for the cat because it does not understand what's going. For one, your cat could panic when you start putting it inside the carrier. It could also feel neglected when you don't give it enough time because you are very busy getting ready for the move.

As the pet owner, it is your job to make things easier for your cat. You have to prepare your pet for the move gradually. It's also your lookout to prepare all the documents necessary for the move especially if you are emigrating. You should also make sure that your pet is complete with all of the required vaccinations in your destination. And you also have to find a pet friendly airline that will be willing to transport your beloved cat.

It would be easier if you are only moving across town or to the next state. You have the option to leave your pet at the cattery for a few days while you are busy. But if you are far from your new place it would be difficult to come back to fetch your cat. The fees are usually a bit expensive.

The cheapest solution is to take your cat with you anyway.  To prepare it for the long haul, you should put it in a carrier a few days before the move. Place the carrier in an empty room but don't forget to feed your cat too. Leave the favorite toys of your cat there too. And don't forget to leave the litter tray there as well. This will help your pet get accustomed to being in an enclosed compartment and make him ready for the actual travel.
