How To Select The Best Moving Company

How To Select The Best Moving Company

Published on Saturday, 21 July 2012

One of the crucial decisions to make when relocating is the choice of a moving company. This should better happen early on, so you can use professional help during the later stages of the moving process. There are so many companies, so how does one select the best? Read further to find out

When you start browsing the Web, you would be perplexed by the quantity and variety of moving companies you can find. But you have to research on several criteria in order to choose the company right for you. Because every moving is different, as people are different and situations never repeat.

Price
Often you rush into the offers with the lowest price. If you do that, you can easily get disappointed by the actual quantity and quality of the job done. The respected moving companies have slightly higher offers, but they put the accent on satisfying their customers and that's why their prices are high. Eventually that additional costs pay off.

Personal approach
It's a good idea to arrange to meet a representative of the company. This way you can estimate the companies approach to the customers, as well as receive a professional feedback on the moving service option you have chosen (the moving option is one of the following: full moving service, partial moving service or do-it-yourself moving). This representative will also present you a reasonable moving offer, and you can discuss additional services and, of course, the price of the package deal. The representatives of the best companies usually visit your soon-to-be-previous-residence to estimate the amount of job needed, before they give you a price for the service.

Transport insurance
Good companies should always have your possessions insured for the time being of the moving out and in and the transportation. Ask about the insurance rates in advance. That data should be mentioned in the moving offer they present to you. If you have expensive and/or unique art pieces, notify the company. They can offer an additional insurance just for those pieces. If they don't, make sure you insure these items separately by yourself.

Belonging to a moving companies organization
Research if the moving company is a member of a bigger group, moving companies alliance or another professional organization. Such organizations have minimum standards of service. Independent, stand-alone companies often don't follow such requirements and you can be disappointed by their services.

Feedback
Ask around in town, if the company is local, or find in Internet a forum, chat, or evaluation site on moving in your area. Other customer's feedback is the factor, that can give you real facts and events and impressions. Often others had the same troubles or worries. Try to contact the feedback authors on-line and ask them specific questions, if you have any.

NOTA BENE: The moving company offer
Upon accepting the moving offer, pay attention to the following:
    -in the offer should be the exact number of movers, how many hours they and the transport will be available and the hourly payment for the movers, the van or lorry and the driver for extra hours;
    -the overall price in the offer is basic! If in the course of the relocation occurs some extra work, like disassembling of a particularly complex furniture piece, or carrying of something extremely heavy and so on, you have to expect to pay more
    -in some offers the value added tax is not calculated to the price! Find out and recalculate the overall price, so you don't get unpleasantly surprised by it at the very end!
