Just Moved and Taking the Initiative in a New Neighborhood

Published on Saturday, 15 August 2009 Just Moved and Taking the Initiative in a New Neighborhood It's a normal feeling to be a bit awkward and reserved when you've just moved into a new neighborhood or a new community. You know little or no one at all, and you're at a loss on how to fit in. The key to fitting into a new neighborhood is taking the initiative. It's always best for you to lose that reservation and shyness of yours and be more outgoing. There are many ways to know new people in a community, like participating in community activities and joining community groups. Even in parents associations in school, you can meet new people and even get tips from the other parents who've been residents of the neighborhood for awhile. You can also opt to invite you neighbors for a cup of tea or coffee, or even a weekend barbecue so you can get to know them better. You can drop by their houses and drop them a note inviting them. Also, never be afraid to ask questions, like where the best butcher in town is or what the best restaurant is. Simple questions like these can turn into real conversations and you can then establish your presence in the neighborhood more. But you should also be careful with being too often, as there will be people who will be bound to abuse your openness. Be sure to think about your limits first and stick to them.
