Moving Out of a Rented Space: What to Do before You Bid Goodbye

Published on Thursday, 04 February 2010

Many people mistake a renting arrangement to be something akin to a fire and forget approach, where you simply move in and then move out. This is not the case.

It does not mean that just because you are renting the space, you are not liable for it. You need to take responsibility of the space before you leave to make it ready for the next tenant. Just ask yourself the question of how you would feel if you moved into a space that was just left behind by the previous occupant? You need to leave the space in the same condition as it was when you first moved in. Usually the penalty for failing to do so would be the non-reimbursement of your deposit - paid when you first moved in - and other charges if the amount is not enough to cover repairs and / or cleaning fees; all this, by the way is usually stipulated in the contract you sign before you move in.

So the first thing to do is give the house or apartment a once over to see if there are any repairs that need to be done. Also, do a a general cleaning of the place which will not only do the obvious, but also allow you to find items that you previously misplaced.
