The amount you pay up front differs depending on the kind of operation the landlord (or landlady) has, but usually you'll be asked to give a certain amount as a deposit - refundable when you move out if you leave the place the way it was when you first moved in - and anything from an advanced payment of one to three months worth of rent. The advance is a security measure to ensure that renters have the capacity to pay.

Of course, before you formally move in, you need to have the place thoroughly checked so that you can have an accurate appraisal of the place and you also get to know what the facilities and the utilities are before you move in and get settled. This way, you can determine before you leave which things need to be repaired so you can get your deposit back, as the deposit is to ensure that any damage incurred during your stay will be covered and paid for even if you leave.
