Spain or the Kingdom of Spain  in Spanish - Reino de España , España, is a country located in Southern Europe. Spain have two small
exclaves in the northern part of Africa.
The mainland of Spain is bounded on the south and the east by Mediterranean Sea, on North by the Bay of Biscay and on West by the Atlantic Ocean - containing the Canary Islands. Spain shares borders with France, Portugal, Andorra, Gibraltar and Morocco. It is the largest of three sovereign states that make up the Iberian Peninsula - the other two are Portugal and Andorra.

Different cultures have settled in modern Spain, such as the Celts, Romans, Iberians, Visigoths, and Moors. For over five centuries, during the Middle Ages, large areas were under Islamic rulers’ control, a fragment of which survived to 1492, when the Christian kingdoms of Castile and Aragon completed the 770 years long process of driving the Moors out.

That same year Columbus reached the New World, leading to the creation of world wide Spanish Empire. Spain became the most powerful country in Europe, but wars and other problems reduced Spain to a diminished status. The 20th century was dominated in the middle years by Franco dictatorship and a stable democracy in 1978. Spain joined what is now known as the European Union in 1986, and enjoyed an economic and cultural renaissance.
