Central London is, as its name suggests, the part of London that is right at the centre of the city. From 2004 until 2008 it was officially a geographic area as designated by the London Plan. However, in 2008, the plan was redrawn and Central London, as it was once defined, ceased to exist as one of London’s sub regions. Today, the name refers to the city centre and the area surrounding it. It is the part of London that is quite built up, is expensive to live in and where many of the city’s commuters come to work every day.

The most central spot in all of Central London, is Charing Cross. This point, where you can find at statue representing King Charles I, is located where the Strand, Whitehall and Cockspur Street meet, below the famous Trafalgar Square. When referring to a location in or around Greater London, the distance from Charing Cross is often included, since it is a reference point that has come to symbolize the centre of the entire capital.

Although there is not an official geographic boundary for Central London, the Royal Commission does describe it as including some of the city’s most iconic landmarks and tourist destinations. The Royal Palaces and Parliament are part of Central London, as are the Government headquarters, the Law Courts and many offices from which large industrial and commercial companies are based. But Central London is not all about business and the running of government. It is also the hub of artistic, cultural and intellectual life in London, according to the Royal Commission, since it includes institutions ranging from the National Gallery to the British Museum, the University of London and the Tate Gallery. The national opera and ballet are also headquartered in Central London and it is also home to a great deal of shopping and other tourist destinations, which the city’s economy relies on.

Moving Central London man and van
Central London is not only the centre of Greater London, but it also draws visitors from all over England and people from all over the world who come to see the sights and experience what this city has to offer. Although the London Plan’s Central London sub region no longer exists, there is still a “central activities zone” according to the plan. This area includes the City of London, and the central-lying parts of the following boroughs: Camden, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Islington, Southwark, Kensington and Chelsea and Lambeth. It also includes much of Wesminster. Back in 1901, the definition of Central London included the City of London, Bethnal Green, Finsbury, Holborn, Shoreditch, Bermondsey, St. Marylebone, Stepney and Westminster.

Today, Central London would certainly fall within the area known as Inner London, which includes 12 boroughs. Although not all of each of these boroughs is considered “central”, parts of Greenwich, Hackney, Camden, Islington, Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth, Southwark, Wandsworth, Tower Hamlets, Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea as well as Lewisham fall within Central London. Of course, one can assume that the closer a residence is to the centre of the city, the more exclusive and pricey it will be. Part of what makes the centre of London so fashionable is its proximity to businesses, arts and entertainment, shopping and cultural institutions. You’ll find anything you need if you are moving to Central London, but rest assured that the prices are usually a bit higher than in the outskirts of the city. For you, it may be worth it to be where the action is, amidst the city’s buzz and hum.
