The SW18 postcode district is one of the 28 districts in the London SW postcode area, aka the South Western and Battersea postcode area. The area was created as a result of the merger of those two districts and the current postcodes fall into one of the two areas: SW1-SW10 are in the South Western district, while SW11 through SW20 are in the Battersea district. The area itself originated in 1857, but back then it was called the SW district. All those name changes can get confusing, but the region’s geography has remained relatively unchanged since 1868 when it absorbed part of the S district. The rest of the dissolved S district went to the London SE district. Much of the City of Westminster and the government institutions are covered by the various SW1 districts, but parts of the London Boroughs of Lambeth, Merton, Croydon, Richmond upon Thames, Wandsworth, Hammersmith and Fulham and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea are also represented.
The SW18 postcode district still carries the historic name the Wandsworth district, although this name no longer appears in postal addresses or on street signs. It covers Wandsworth, Southfields, and Earlsfield in the Wandsworth local authority area. Its northern boundary runs along the south bank of the River Thames, from Hurlingham Park to slightly past the Wandsworth Bridge. And it southern boundary stretches all the way to the Wimbledon Park Athletics Track. The Wandsworth Common stretches along its eastern boundary, while King George’s Park runs down the centre of the district. The Southside Shopping Centre is where most people head for their retail needs, while smaller, independent shops can be found along Garratt Ln. In the southeast corner of the district, residents can enjoy the Wandilea Bowls and Social Club.
